Scott Duncan was born in Menzieshill, Dundee in 1979.
He grew up a “child of Thatcher” and worked for years in a series of short-term temporary roles in the customer service industry: bars, hotels, call centres. He embraced the utopian rave subculture and was influenced by the “casual” football hooligan sartorial aesthetic. In 2010 he qualified as a social worker and spent the next 12 years working with children in care and in community justice.
His work is comprised of sculptural, sonic, written and printed work exploring social history and subcultures as vehicles to navigate our shared past, identity, loss and trauma. He explores how societal power structures conspire to dictate reality, how experiential memory and cultural nostalgia can be evoked via the repurposing of ambiguous discarded objects.
